Loons publish 2009 schedule

The Great Lakes Loons will start a little earlier next season … on a nightly basis.

The Loons begin the 2009 season on the road, visiting Dayton for the season-opener on Thursday, April 9. The home opener at Dow Diamond is Monday, April 13.

The home opener is the first for a new starting time. For games Monday through Saturday in April, Loons games will start at 6:05 p.m., one hour earlier than in the past.
According to Great Lakes President Paul Barbeau, the move was considered because of the cooler temperatures and because school is still in session.

For games in May through September, the starting times will return to 7:05 p.m.

Loons snap 7 game skid with 2-1 win

Scott Van Slyke doubled down the right field line with two outs in the bottom of the eighth inning to lead the Great Lakes Loons to a 2-1 victory over the Beloit Snappers. The win snapped a seven-game losing streak for the Loons.

Michael Tarsi (0-6) limited the Loons to two hits in his first seven innings. But in the eighth, with Beloit leading 1-0, Jaime Ortiz led off with a hustle double to left-center. Then with one out, Pedro Baez doubled to left-center to tie the game at one. Baez advanced to third with two outs. Van Slyke followed with a double down the first-base line to give the Loons a 2-1 lead.

Miguel Ramirez (1-0) pitched the final 1 2/3 innings to earn the victory. Justin Miller started and limited the Snappers to three hits in 5 1/3 scoreless innings. Victor Garate relieved him and earned two key strikeouts in the sixth.

The Loons (12-15) and Snappers (11-17) meet for the rubber game of the series Saturday night at Dow Diamond. It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Night at Dow Diamond, and the Loons will wear special pink jerseys that will be auctioned off during the game. All proceeds for the Jersey off the Back Auction will go to MidMichigan Medical Center, Midland’s Center for Women’s Health. Loonies lose 6 straight, back home tonight

The Great Lakes Loons completed a winless six-game roadtrip Wednesday night, dropping their six straight game and their third straight to the Clinton LumberKings by a score of 6-4.

The Loons (11-14) return home to host the Beloit Snappers, Midwest League affiliate of the Minnesota Twins. The contest will be the first of a three-game series (10-16). Please join us out at Dow Diamond as the Loons take a stand for the fight against pollution in a night dedicated to promoting eco-friendly living in the Loons’ “Going Green Night”. Loons beat Cougars, Give away diamond

Jaime Ortiz’ solo home run and a second straight night of great pitching was the key as the Loons defeated the Kane County Cougars in front of 2,709 fans at Dow Diamond on Wednesday night by a score of 3-1.

The Loons struck first in the third when Pedro Baez laced a leadoff double down the left field line. Later in the inning, Scott Van Slyke recorded an RBI groundout, scoring Baez and making it 1-0 in favor of the Loons.

Kane County would answer a half-inning later when Todd Johnson’s RBI single tied the game at one.

In the bottom of the fifth, Jaime Ortiz launched a solo homerun to right off Cougars starter Jamie Richmond, his second of the season to give the Loons a 2-1 lead.

Van Slyke helped the Loons tack on an insurance run with an RBI single in the eighth making it 3-1.

Loons’ starter Steven Johnson (2-0) pitched another good ballgame going five solid innings allowing a single run, striking out five and picking his second victory of the season. Jon Dutton pitched two scoreless innings of relief before Matt Sartor pitched two innings without allowing a run and picked up his first save of 2008.

Jamie Richmond started for Kane County and pitched six innings allowing two runs in picking up the loss, dropping his record to 1-1.

The Loons improve to 11-8 while the Cougars fall to 15-4. The Great Lakes Loons are now three games over .500 for the first time in franchise history.

At the end of the seventh inning, OC Tanner and The Dow Chemical Company held a one-carat diamond giveaway contest at Dow Diamond, with Cindy Walter-Smith the winner of the diamond, valued at over $8,000.

The Loons travel to Davenport, Iowa to take on the newly-named Quad Cities River Bandits for a three-game series beginning Friday night. Game time is 8:00pm from Modern Woodman Park.

Loons pick up 1-0 win over Cougars

Loons’ pitchers got themselves in trouble time and time again Tuesday night, but got the job done in the clutch as the Loons defeated the Kane County Cougars in front of 2,156 fans at Dow Diamond on Tuesday night by a score of 1-0.

The Loons picked up their only run of the ballgame when Pedro Baez reached on a Christian Vitters throwing error and made it to second before Jovanny Rosario dropped a bunt down the third base line that was thrown away by Vitters and allowed Baez to score making it 1-0 in favor of the Loons.

Kane County left 14 men on base during the ballgame, including leaving the bases loaded in the fifth, sixth, and ninth innings. The Loons turned an unusual third-to-home double play to end the ballgame as Baez fielded a Michael Lissman ground ball, tagged third for the first out and threw home to retire Michael Richard.

Kyle Smit started for the Loons and left after 84 pitches through 4 1/3 innings. Bobby Blevins (2-1) picked up the victory in the ballgame thanks to getting out of two bases loaded jams during his 3 2/3 innings. Miguel Ramirez pitched a scoreless ninth picking up his sixth save of the season.

Travis Banwart (2-1) started for Kane County and went seven innings allowing one unearned run on eight hits in picking up the tough-luck loss.

The Loons improve to 10-8 while the Cougars fall to 15-3.

The three-game series between the Loons and Cougars concludes Wednesday night. Game time is 7:05pm at Dow Diamond. Steven Johnson is scheduled to start for Great Lakes.
